Welcome and Introductions
Dr. Jerry Bigham, Ohio State University School of Environment and Natural Resources
Where do foundry sands fit in the soils markets?
Speakers from the Ohio State University Extension Service and Kurtz Bros., Inc will explain the demand for manufactured soils, as well as introducing some of the reasons why foundry sand can be an excellent ingredient in soil manufacturing.

Foundry Sands Environmental Profile
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has conducted an extensive, peer-reviewed risk assessment of the foundry sand types that comprise more than 90 percent of available material. Dr. Robert Dungan, lead scientist, will discuss the research study's conclusions and USDA's recommendations for the use of foundry sands in soils applications.

Soil Attributes and Performance of Foundry Sands
For nearly 20 years, researchers at the Ohio State University have conducted research on foundry sand in soils applications. Dr. Elizabeth Dayton will describe the characteristics of foundry sand that make it a good ingredient for soil blending as well as some of the soils-based applications that have potential for foundry sands.

The Voice of Experience: The Ohio Foundry Sand Marketplace
Kurtz Bros., Inc. has been a leader in developing markets for foundry sands in solls applications, starting more than a decade ago. Greg Malone will discuss the various markets that Kurtz has developed for foundry sand blends, along with information on soil specifications, foundry sand quality, and lessons learned in building this market. Kurtz Bros. uses foundry sands in most of its soil blends, including general landscaping blends, transportation projects, bioretention soils and bioswales, and green roofing projects.

Building a Statewide Partnership: The Pennsylvania Experience
Learn how the confluence of industry, academia and government has worked at the state level to identify opportunities for foundry sands in soils applications. Dr. Rick Stehouwer from the State University will describe how his research has supported efforts by the Pennsylvania Foundry Association, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and the Pennsylvania Recycling Market Development Council to encourage this market.

Best Management Practices for Foundries
Soil blenders have specific requirements for granular materials such as foundry sands. Foundry managers are encouraged to attend this session to understand how they need to test and prepare their spent foundry sands for possible use in soil blends. Superior environmental performance, along with stringent QA/QC requirements, are critical factors for success in this marketplace.

Hands On Demonstrations
Touch and feel various soil blends containing foundry sands and to ask questions of both foundry sands suppliers and soil blenders. A tour of OSU's soil laboratory will be provided, along with the chance to see a number of different plants growing in foundry sand soil blends. Enjoy the opportunity to stretch your legs a bit while mingling with other attendees and learning from their experiences.
Hosted by Dr. Elizabeth Dayton and Dr. Nick Basta, OSU
